Finally, a question I can answer from experience: crash, the dude could be in deep sh*t

New York has one of the toughest laws prohibiting the unauthorized practice of law (a.k.a. practicing law without a license). One of my clients back in the day (more than 10 years ago) was accused of practicing law without a license in a few states -- one of which was New York.
Violating the law back then would have been a misdemeanor, but several years ago (I think 2015 maybe?), New York bumped that up to a felony.
So, essentially, in New York it is a felony to hold yourself out as an attorney and practice law in New York if you are not licensed by the state to do so.
The punishment is probably a few years of probation, maybe some limited jail time. But still, it's a felony on the record.
And, man, does the New York Bar take these things seriously.
