In response to "While looking at the balance of power as it has rested for the past 60 years, one wonders what sort of cataclysm might unseat things to effect change." by Beryllium

Honestly, it has nothing to do with selling guns. It is a lobby gaining wealth and power

It is about maintaining a powerbase and that powerbase is not aligned with the manufacturers.

I'll give a couple of quick examples: Right now, there are several well documented cases of manufacturers struggling. The gun lobby doesn't seem to care all that much, they are only interested in their own money.

The big telling case was one time Ruger or somebody like them came up with a safety feature for a gun that would allow only the legal owner to fire it. The gun lobby turned on that manufacturer so fast, calling for boycotts by its members that they nearly bankrupted the company.

You would think the manufacturers call the tune, but actually they are dancing to someone else's tune.
