A few things about trading.

If you and someone else catch the same thing with a bad appraisal you can trade it to try and get a better version. The IVs re-roll when you trade so you shouldn't trade things with a great appraisal. The level can also change. I traded a dratini with someone that went from level 13 or 14 to level 19 or 20. Most trades cost 100 dust. Trading a shiny that you both have costs 20k dust. Trading a legendary, a shiny one of you doesn't have (I think) or something one of you doesn't have yet is 1 million dust. It gets cheaper the higher your friendship level. If you trade for a giant magikarp that adds to that medal, the same is probably true for tiny rattatta. If you go on vacation or have to drive somewhere a good distance away you should catch something you need candy for and trade it to someone when you get home. You get candy back when you trade things. The larger the distance from each other (or from your current spot, I'm not sure which) the more candy you get back. It seems to cap at 3. Still, that could be 10 candy per instead of 7.
