TanaCon may have been her biggest disaster to date but it's also exponentially more press than she's ever gotten before. She doesn't give a fuck about the fans. She got what she wanted.

Shane Dawson undoubtedly knows that skewering Tana gets him eyeballs. Take aim at the biggest target and fire away. People will notice. But he's very much an old school YouTube, having been at the first Vidcon in 2010. This isn't a scheme he concocted with Tana. He's doing it because he hates her and because he benefits from attacking her.
