I've heard this called the Strange New Respect Phenomenon.

A politician who is reviled by certain groups is given a "strange new respect" by the same groups after he or she has been out of power for some time if the current holder of the position is also someone these groups do not like. The line goes something like "Why can't you be more like X? He/she wasn't so bad. You, OTOH, are the devil incarnate and probably punch babies."

It's pretty funny when you notice the shift.
