Really, it's that trans men don't get opportunities to play men, and trans women don't get opportunities to play women, so all that is left for them are trans roles.
But there's no barrier (until recently, in the form of protest) for a cis actor playing a trans person, and obviously the commercial decision is to pick an actor with name recognition, star power, box office draw etc over one with none of those things, so what opportunities for trans actors does that leave?
If audiences would accept trans actors playing cis roles, this wouldn't be an issue - but they don't, so here we are.
