He went to the Seattle Fest while I was going, not just when he had a movie in it. And his films are very much about the Northwest, except the big ones, which aren't too far off what a film fan might make. I'd compare him more to some UK filmmakers he's been influenced by, like Alan Clarke, and Mike Leigh.
Has any major American filmmaker had as a stranger career than Gus Van Sant? -- (link)
