It very much didn't. Final polls predicted the popular vote bang on, including the final shifts.

People are basing way too much on a near coin flip prediction going the wrong way. And don't give me the electoral college line. That's moving the goal posts - the question is, "were election polls accurate in what they claimed?" And they were. Polls for special elections have been good as well.
