I'd say people voted *against* George Bush, and that's what got a relative unknown - Bill Clinton - elected. But Ross Perot had a huge hand in this. So, never mind that.
If people voted against candidates, Obama would have lost re-election. GWB would have lost re-election. So... fair enough. Running *against* Trump isn't enough. Whoever the Democrats run must have their own cult of personality to beat Trump.
