One minor caveat: It's a binary choice in states where the election is close, or states that have adopted the National Popular Vote.

For example, I've voted for third party candidates in Presidential elections about half the time I've lived in Oregon -- but only when the candidate I actually wanted to be elected President was leading by at least 10% in the polls (far outside the margin of error).
Why? I think it's important to have a variety of voices in the political debate. If I can help an acceptable "minor party" establish or maintain their place on Oregon's electoral ballots, I'm inclined to do so.
Trump won Tennessee by a margin of 26% in 2016. I think the margin will be much closer, but if Trump is polling 12 to 15 points ahead of the Democratic nominee a few days before election day, I wouldn't fault Will for voting for someone else.
At least until a significant number of voters do what I do. :-) :-)
