I sure am! And I do go to a barber, though not as often for a haircut.

I get a beard trim and haircut every other session, then keep the stray fluff cut back on my own (with scissors usually). Get yourself a good set of scissors and tweezers to cut back or pluck the stray hairs and you'll be good to go.
I got a kit (can't remember from where though) with scissors, a great wooden comb, and a couple smaller plastic combs that has served me very well.
The other most important thing I've found is regular treatment with beard oil or beard balm. The best stuff I've found is Proraso Beard Balm ...
