When you trade a pokemon, there is a chance the version you will get will be 'lucky'

We have no idea the odds, but we do know older pokemon lead to higher odds for some reason

Lucky pokemon are the same (look the same) as regular pokemon, but the background will be different to identify luckiness.

Lucky versions of pokemon require less stardust (and less candy I think) to power up. Otherwise they are the same pokemon (don't look different, don't have different powers, etc)
