Some people have so many pairs that they don't get worn and that makes no sense to me. There are collectors that don't wear theirs often if ever

so you're not wrong in thinking they sit in boxes because that's certainly true. But more often they're worn but just not regularly as people want to preserve them for as long as possible. So we buy a lot of pairs of sneakers and have a rotation to avoid wearing any one pair out.
I wear general release Nike Air Max for daily wear and walking dogs. The rare pairs are for nights out and weekends when the weather is nice. They don't go out if there's a chance of bad weather and they don't get worn at all in the winter because of the salt that's left on the ground.
