An oil baron and movie/tv producer named Jack Wrather built the Disneyland Hotel at the request of Walt Disney, who was tapped out on capital/credit at the time. Once Disneyland became huge, Wrather saw the resort as his legacy and refused to sell.
After Wrather's death in 1984, Disney CEO Michael Eisner negotiated to get Disneyland Hotel, which the company had NEVER owned. He eventually brokered a deal where he and another company would do a 50/50 split of all assets of Wrather's corporation. The Spruce Goose and RMS Queen Mary were two of those properties. Disney didn't want anything but the Disneyland Hotel, but they had to take this stuff anyway.
