tl;dr: Brazil sucks. So does UN.
We have a law in Brazil, since 2010, which states that, if someone is convicted, in a higher court (not the highest court, but essentially a second trial, if the defendant so chooses, by 3 judges instead of 1), you cannot run for political office for 8 years after the conviction.
Former president Lula was convicted for corruption in a trial (lowest federal court). His sentence was 9 years. He appealed, which sends the case for a higher court. He was convicted again, unanimously. His sentence was upped to 12 years. He is in prison. He appealed a few dozen times, in the same court, and all were appreciated and denied, and he was at last arrested.
Because we are a banana republic, he is the official presidential candidate for the Worker's Party. Yes, it's illegal, but who cares? Another court will look into that and, most likely, kill his run (a former mayor and minister will run in his place).
So, today, a UN Human Rights commission said that he should be allowed to appeal and have his right to run for President. Because, you know, who cares about that law? Which has been in place for many elections (this should be the 4th). Kept about a 1000 convicted people from running for public office. And now it's a problem? Now we are denying people their political rights?
Oh, who signed that law back in 2010? Lula.
