the ones driving most of this are generally a fringe trying to divide politics further and play a bit of a populist outrage game.

Generally I categorise them as terrible racists (Hanson, Dutton, Katter, Palmer) who are trying to incite and exploit that. It's unlikely that any of them can do more than win seats in Parliament, but unfortunately not impossible (Dutton *might* be PM at the end of the day, but I doubt he carries the next election if he is).
