honestly I think FPTP drives a lot of polarisation. if you know you can get a majority with 35% of the vote, you don't need a bigger tent.

I like Australia's prop rep system, in that it's only half the story, but it allows for louder minority voices (which - Pauline Hanson aside - I think on balance is a good thing). Doesn't cause more frequent elections, but does tend to force more compromise.
I've said before, I think Harper was a good PM in minority. Not my cup of tea, but he did a decent job. I only thought things really went off the rails when he had a majority and the reins came off.
