for all the talk of revolving door PM here, it's more cosmetic and irritating that any kind of actual instability.

Italy's dramas were all around inability to actually form a government/governing coalition. Here there's always been a stable government, just quibbling over who the leader is.
also worth noting that it's a reasonably short election cycle - 3 years - so all of them except the new guy have won an election as leader of a party. of course none of them has actually *finished* a term in office, so there's still that.
Turnbull probably also could have stayed on. he likely would have beat Dutton if he'd stood, but it would've been ugly, and the far right would've kept screaming. he basically fell on his sword in an attempt to keep his faction in control.
