The thing that’s to blame here is the false sense of exceptionalism that gets instilled in people from every direction.

Conditions them to think that obvious longshots are actually in the bag for them. And when reality presents itself, they lack the coping mehcanisms to comprehend it. And because they can’t comprehend it, they lash out in a rageful and futile attempt to reassert control over their own reality.

Because lashing out is already a part of their regular behaviour pattern. So many shooters are also domestic abusers, because they cannot handle a reality that diverges from their own misplaced sense of exceptionalism.
