Would give up his fairly safe congressional seat for the attorney general job. Feels like a lateral move, though again, the NY AG tends to be one of the more powerful ones.
The scuttlebutt seems to be that he was told to throw his hat into the ring at the behest of the Democratic establishment and/or Cuomo, because they were absolutely *terrified* of Zephyr Teachout winning. It apparently was the right call because they split the upstate vote. Tish James barely even campaigned as far as I know, but was able to win a plurality because of NYC. (James 40, Teachout 31, Maloney 25)
