In response to "He gave up a safe seat to play spoiler? -- nm" by Will Hunting

It was potentially awkward, but less so now.

He was running for re-election and in the AG primary. New York law does not let you appear on the ballot for more than one office, so if he won the primary, the Democrats would have had to appoint a guy to run in November since the federal primary was in June. The GOP has actually pounced on that here just in case, he did win and it was an open seat. Even still, I’ve seen the prognosticators tick it down from “Safe Dem” to “Likely Dem.” it would have probably gone tossup/Lean GOP if he wasn’t on the ballot.
