That is a great point. I was actually looking up some of those details this past summer.

About 68% of the people covered by health insurance are covered by employer-provided plans.
And about 60% of people with employer-provided plans are offered a choice in different plans (the other 40% just get the single plan offered).
And then -- to peel the onion back even further -- only about 30% of people able to pick different plans can pick different plans from different insurance companies.
So, bottom line, of all the people covered by health insurance, only 15% of them (approximately) can chose their own insurance company, but about 40% at least have the option to pick among a few different plans.
