Since this came up yesterday, here are a few Gambit tips for JaxSean:
1) Pay attention to the bars at the top of the screen. They don't just tell you the score. The white portion of the bar shows how many motes the opponent has that are currently not banked. When that white bar is mostly filled, an invasion is more likely to do damage.
2) Don't invade the instant your opponent summons a primeval. The purpose of an invasion at this point is to kill opponents, thereby healing the primeval. When the monster is summoned, they're at 100% health AND the other team doesn't have a damage stack. So, the primeval is tougher.
You want to wait about 30 seconds, long enough for sloppy teams to waste supers and power ammo on the monster. Then, you go in and kill them, taking the primeval back up to 100% health. I do acknowledge that you can perform well as an irritant through an early invasion. It just won't help much.
If a team is capable of killing a primeval quickly, the reality is that you're not going to be able to beat them anyway.
3) This one is crucial. Pay attention to how many motes your teammates have. The big numbers are 5, 10, and 15. Those are when you get better blockers. If you're at 6-8 motes and a teammate is at 4/9/14, you should let them take a mote. Your team will send another blocker to the other side.
4) There are only three spots per map where an invader will show up. Also, they won't appear where the monsters are. So, that narrows down placement to two. Learn the potential spots and find places where you can get out of the line of fire. In most instance, you'll get attacked by a laser or a sniper, not a rocket or grenade. So, you don't have to worry about area of effect attacks, just straight headshots.
Also, understand your role. When you have five motes or more during an invasion, you shouldn't fight unless you have your super. When you have less than five motes, your responsibility is to protect the mote holders. You won't lose much, but they will. So, you become a bodyguard of sorts. Your death won't hurt anything unless the primeval is up. In that case, everyone should be trying to team-kill or avoid the invader.
5) If possible, upgrade a weapon to max so that it drops orbs on double kills. One of the reasons why I'm so good in Gambit is that all three of my weapons drop orbs, giving our team quicker supers. A team with four players capable of double-kill orb drops is absolutely savage.
6) When the primeval comes, understand the math. You'll see a message about damage stacks at the bottom of the screen. When that number is four or less, you're not doing a lot of damage. Don't waste your most powerful strikes unless the primeval is down to 50% health or less. Once it hits five stacks, you should unleash supers and power ammo.
7) Choose wisely with your super. When you don't invade, you want something that can wipe out a group of enemies quickly. Alternately, you want something like the hunter tether that will generate lots of orbs for your team.
When you invade, you want something that has quick strike capabilities and is extremely difficult to defend. Most of the new supers qualify, as does the Titan stomp or hammer throw. The warlock void bomb and the hunter's golden gun are also great. Also, remember that certain gear improves your super. Seek that as you level up your character.
