And here is what I wish I knew on my first character.

Once you hit level 50 and the powerful gear will actually be powerful there are a few things you should know. First of all, powerful drops will either be +1, +5 or +10 of you;re current power. That's why you can get a powerful drop below your currently equipped item, something else is holding you back. Some things also have a soft cap, after which I think they all drop to +1, but I'm not sure. You may get lucky and a +1 drop at +2.
First soft cap is 520. These are the daily milestones (strike, gambit, crucible, adventure), some of the weekly milestones (strikes, crucible, gambit, story missions, clan engrams for clanmates doing activities together, flashpoint, ikora's thing, spiders bounty), ranking up in crucible and gambit (and resetting your valor rank) and those one time quests for completing an activity wearing a full set of related armor.
The next cap is 540. That is just the two nightfall milestones.
The next cap may be 560 though some say these are in the later 580 group. If there is 560 it is gambit infamy reset, iron banner bounties, petra's challenge (2 weekly bounties), ascendant challenge and petra's quests (one is the 8 daily bounties, I think the other is the blind well thing).
Then there's the 580 cap. These are the first 2 or 3 bosses in the last wish raid, the heroic blind well and exotic engrams.
Then you hit the hard cap of 600. These are prime engrams, possibly exotic quests, the weekly gambit bounty and weekly clan engram for 5k experience from clan bounties. Those are easier if you save some of the completed ones for the next week. I think it takes 7 to complete. Fewer if you do the ones for finished things with clanmates.
