That all depends on the cost. I doubles each time, but 20 or ever 40 legendary shards is fine.

Also, if you are running the item that drops a masterwork core on boss death, don't dismantle anything until you get the core. If you get a core from dismantling something (which you would have gotten anyway) it treats it like a boss dropped so you lose that buff.
