Maddux came out of the Cubs farm system which produced pitchers with good off speed stuff who also learned to rely on their infield.

Bruce Sutter's career was saved and made off the split finger fastball. Rick Reuschel had several 20 win years with Cubs with off speed pitches and a slow fastball. Maddux also had the smarts and memory to work that well.
