I went and saw First Man on an old school IMAX screen and liked the limited use of IMAX for the moon scenes. I liked the movie as well spoilers

On an incredibly biased basis, I really liked it but I also recognize that's probably cause it felt like the movie was made for me. I grew up fascinated and learning all the about the space race events so I knew all of the major beats that were going to happen and then to have them so gloriously on the big screen

From the opening..wait..are we in a X-15? We are!

The scene where Neil tries to explain his interest and joy in orbital mechanics? I was in my seat making spaceship under maneuvering gestures. The immediate follow up where he tries to explain to his wife and they both start laughing? Did the same with Veronica enough times.

His willingness to make an effort while at the White House and answer when spoken to but generally drifting toward the edges...did that at premieres.

I really found the POV stuff different that previous cinematic versions I had seen of the events in the movie. As I realized that POV was going to be how the majority of the events were going to be portrayed, I watched with an ever increasing sense of dread as Apollo 1 approached and the kind of wish that maybe it would change

A less social, better eyesight version of me (well lots of right place, right time stuff as well) and I could see myself as the version of Armstrong portrayed in First Man.

David had mention that Hidden Figures did a better job of covering the same time / story but I'm wondering if that's because the focus of the respective source material is completely different. I think the movie does really well but perhaps the critique then lies in whether or not that such a narrow topic should be given the cinematic treatment.

IMO opinion I've seen award winning creatives use their immediate post award halo waste that goodwill on far worse projects
