It picked up early criticism for not delving into (spoilers)

AIDS and his eventual death from it. Which is hugely relevant to that community, I would think.

Some folks are also bitter at Mercury himself for the sudden way he announced his illness rather than raising awareness, as though he failed the community.

So if a person did know that going in, it might have changed their view of the film.
