Reading it, they really felt like victims to me. Victims of a system that convinced them to their core

that to live a good life they needed to own lots and lots of shit.

They're very aware of their problems, they're not trying to find excuses after excuses for their situation. Still, they're obviously unable to change. It's as if it's part of their DNA. I felt sad for them in the end really.
