part of it is that it's so weak a joke as to seem just like a genuine opinion of his.

like, people make jokes all the time (it's a specialty of mine!) along the lines of "wouldn't it be outrageous if I actually thought this?" But those examples are just... real attitudes people have and that have been used to hurt people. So where's the joke?
