To some degree. But I wouldn't NOT go to a show because of the opening band. They are there to get new exposure.

That isn't what an Oscar host is. The host is a known quantity.
An opening band is, 'We know you are here for something else, but while we have you a second, check this out.'
An Oscar host performs a similar task but for a different reason.
