The host isn't just about hosting the show, but promoting it beforehand.

Who's hosting is something that gets discussed by people, the person hosting gives interviews about hosting the Oscars and gets on magazine covers, etc... it's something that drives interest in watching the event in a way that the actual nominees don't.
