A true psychopath* would have chained them together and then waited for a bystander to come by and claimed to have found them and then freed them ....

* this is not a clinical diagnosis. Most likely an actual psychopath wouldn't have the planning capacity required to carry it out.
also who would accuse someone of this.
... maybe The Rookie will have something similar.
