It will help you a lot if you go into your internet settings and turn off all graphics.

It's easy, a couple of clicks. Then if somebody posts a link...say of beautiful nekkid women, you can turn them back on, go look at the pretty prettys then turn your graphics back off.
It also helps a lot if you go into the security settings under internet tools, click the "red" forbidden icon, click add, then start entering all the ad sites that are on pages you frequent. You don't even have to enter each individual ad url, you can use wildcards, so http://www.*.tribalfusion/*.com
would halt all tribal fusion ads dead in their tracks and you wouldn't have to sit there watching your statusbar as it says "loading...2 items remaining....loading....2 items remaining" for 10 minutes. To get a quick list of your main offenders, just right click every ad on a page and write down the names, like "adrevolver.com" and so on.
Those are about the only two things I can think of that will help your speed a lot. I'm sure others here have some more ideas. :)
