Not to be contrary, but isn't tons of the scenes we see in many movies about war/violence/terror attacks taken from actual news footage? -- nm

If it's "film that's specifically about the thing the footage is of" that's completely different than "thing we totally made up". -- nm

I mean, look at any disaster movie showing people rioting, etc. Certainly not all that is staged for each movie making it? -- nm

Also, it should be noted that when looking for footage, we usually don't know when or where it's from.

I havent seen Bird Box but I'm pretty sure it's not about Lac Megantic. -- nm

Right. If I'm going to see a film about 9/11, I expect to see actual footage of 9/11. nm

So I guess my assumption is (at a basic level), that is a recognizable event. But isn't that true of basically any event at some level. It is going

Stock footage of a random tornado in the middle of nowhere isn't going to be noticed and likely no one would care.

But like I said up there, there's no easy way to know what the footage is exactly -- (edited)

What if it's "news broadcast in the context of increasing instability in the earth's core"? -- nm

Eh - i'm usually pretty open to "show what you want" but it makes me feel a little gross to think a movie would use footage of an actual tragedy

And yet it happens *all the time*. Often it's gonna be oversea, for a tragedy we're not really aware of, but is vastly cheaper

And if I knew about it going in, I'd probably skip that film. nm

If you browse stock footage site like Pond5, you'll find thousands of images from real life catastrophe for sale

I just think it's a little weird no one bothered to do a news report on the issue before someone used images from something that happened close by

I'm pretty sure TV stations and newspaper know the footage they buy from the same place can be used for commercial products

I suppose Vice is different because it's a biopic but it uses actual torture footage in the movie. Mile 22 types use that stuff frequently. -- nm

If Roland Emmerich's next "blow up everybody" film used actual footage from 9/11 in a fictional context, he'd be *crucified*. -- nm
