Argh!!! City government rant inside.

The IRS is in the process of closing several service centers (or parts of them) over the next few years, in different parts of the country. The center here in Covington is one of them, with the processing facility scheduled to be shut down at the end of September. Approximately 900 jobs will be lost. That property is owned by the government and will be transitioned to the city. (About 900 jobs will remain in a leased building.)

The City of Covington just sent out an e-mail inviting citizens to attend an open house kicking off an IRS site study. There are 23 acres available for redevelopment on the riverfront (but behind a levee) and near both downtown Cincinnati and downtown Covington. Prime real estate, in other words.

When the City Manager was contacted about this he said, "Whats happening to the employees is the business of themselves and their employer and has nothing to do with us. We must start planning."

I don't have a problem with the site study (eventually I expect my property value to increase significantly because I'm only a block away). I do have a problem with the city "celebrating" during the shut down. I feel it's rubbing salt in the wounds of the people who are on furlough or working without pay and who will be losing their jobs soon. (The IRS is the 2nd largest employer in the city, fwiw, but not all those people live in the city.)
