That 164 was the year after the outlier year.

And any help the rules would have given him would have helped other pitchers as well, factoring into the ERA+.

Pedro's high in CGs is 13. Gibson had that many shutouts in his top year. And in Pedro's best year, he went 7 and a half innings on average. Gibson averaged something like 8.9.

If anything important rides on it, I'm taking the guy who can be dominant for the whole 9 innings, if not more, over the guy who can dominate into the 8th but not close the game out.
