He's been established as a hothead ruled by emotions and rash, seat of the pants thinking, that's worked until now. And then it bit them all in the ass. It's a character flaw, which is the most satisfying way to create conflict.
Everyone is way too confident because of all their past wins. And then they faced something they couldn't account for.
