I struggle with this question as well. I think the answer is that there is a bigger issue at play here than dealing with one individual. Some of

these individual maybe deserve the benefit of having grown and changed their views, but in a time when there is a rising tide of overt racism and hatred and empowerment of those who hold those ideas, we need bright lines and consequences. We can't show tolerance of these behaviors. It empowers the "what about-ism" that undermines broader discussions and growth. I would hope at some point we can get to a fairer discussion of the subtleties of these situations, but first we have to fully have clear lines about what is not ok, ever. It's about improving the future more than punishing the past.
