We had a special screening of Alita at my theatre last night for “social media influencers”...

And if there’s one thing I learned during the event is that these young people are going to be in for a rude awakening when they are no longer influencers, which will probably happen much sooner than any of them anticipates.

Not one person who does any kind of film criticism or journalism was there. Not print, not radio, not online. Just a bunch of hipsters with man buns and neck tattoos and Duck Dynasty beards who would take 47 of the same picture of themselves in front of the poster (side note: duck face on a twentysomething with a man bun and neck tattoos and Duck Dynasty beards are far worse than normal duck face poses) and ladies with seven different hair colors and skin tight leather suits two sizes too small.

I know understand why people like Shades and Drew McWeeny are having to find other ways of maintaining an income. How can you compete, as a serious writer, with vapid if that’s where the audience is now?

I used to be jealous of Drew and Devin Faraci for having the audiences I could never attain. Now I’m grateful I was never reliant on FJ as my main source of income.
