IIRC, they had a massive recession, austerity and a war over some isolated island a world away. they pulled out of the economic morass in the EU.

now a lot of their manufacturing, their food production, and as NPR told, most all of their floral production had moved to the EU.
In the EU London became the banking center of the world, much of that is moving to Frankfurt.
