So being generous, it is roughly 2600 miles from Maine to Mexico. A '67 Skylark gets roughly 14 mpg. So they'd need to have 185 gallons of gasoline -- (edited)

to make that trip. As long as they had about 9 gallon "jugs" they could have done it with 21 jugs. Of course, 9 gallons is ALOT

and at roughly 6.3lb per gallon, that's 1165 lb of gas or 0.5 tons

Methinks their plan had a few flaws :)
