The funny thing is, I think this is exactly what happened at the hotel where I attended a fraternity conference a couple years ago. With the hotel's permission, we brought in our own set-up for wi-fi in the ballroom where we were holding our business meeting. We'd learned years before that most hotels aren't capable of handling another 300 people on their wi-fi network at once.
About 5 minutes after set everything up and fired up the wi-fi connection, their IT lead (who had helped us work through permissions with the hotel) came running in obviously panicked: the entire hotel network had suddenly collapsed.
He chatted with our IT dude and we ended up changing most of the settings we could. We rebooted, and then everything was fine.
Dunno if it was the exact same problem -- we changed quite a few things -- but I do remember changed all the network naming conventions from Stargate references over to words connoting messiness and chaos: detritus, flotsam, jetsam, kipple, etc.
