while it's commendable that he writes his own jokes, it's also a liability. you realize after a while that all of his monologues are exactly the same. he's been in a comedy rut for fifteen years.
letterman has slowed down a lot, understandably, but he was known for his innovation and just plain weirdness back in the day. there is absolutely no comparison. letterman consistently pushed the limits of what a talk show could be, and leno took the safe route for his entire career.
