I think he'd be better served if Leno failed.

Conan uprooted from NYC to go to L.A. He was set to get the best L.A. guests NBC could book, with the hour later Ferguson being his main competition.
Now, NBC will book all the best guests for Leno's 10:00 show, while Conan fights with Ferguson over the second tier guests. And Ferguson could pull some top guests because they've already done Leno on NBC.
I'm confident that if he knew it would play out like this, Conan would have bolted NBC when he had the chance. And then it would be The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
