He was many many years in the future. Humanity was nowhere to be found (IIRC). The ship had developed an AI that fell in love with him.

There's a small chance that he could be the Red Angel.

There's also a small chance that the squid-probe could have been sent back by the Discovery AI.

(There's also a chance - perhaps a larger chance - that a version of the Emperor from the future could be the red angel.)
