I also liked that they played with the Evil Stepmother bit that Disney is so known for.

Russel's father was never around, and you get the impression his step-mom is perhaps a bit unkind when he says she tells him he bothers his father too often. But in the end, there's his step-mom in the audience being supportive and no Dad to be seen.
