the adventure he thought he never had, or that Ellie pictured herself having. until he realized, after he finally got the house to Paradise Falls, that the adventure had been his marriage.

once he realizes this, then he's actually at the place, personally, where he can dare to do the things that he had always dreamed about and take action to save Kevin, Russell, and Dug.
