I remember QL ending with Sam disappearing and not returning at all. He had a discussion with "God" about his future and whether he controlled it or if it was out of his hands. "God said it was up to Sam how his future played out and he could return home one he accepted that the power to do so was in his own hands.

More Wizard of Oz than anything in Endgame, IMO.
