I think the problem is that the US press has had a hard time adapting. For decades the press had parties on both sides that were at least within

boundaries relatively intellectually and politically comparable. That meant treating each side as if their views were of equal value. They've had a hard time adapting to that baseline changing. Additionally, when you had portions of the "mainstream press" splinter into the likes of Fox News and MSNBC, it's been harder for the more "impartial press" to appear that way as everything has begun to be seen through separate lenses. So they bend over backward to be "impartial" but have devolved into being ineffective because their fear of being seen as partisan means they think they have to treat all ideas equally.
